I recently met with Jon Decatorsmith, owner of Scratched Vinyl, a unique record store in the village of Barrington. I appreciate Jon taking the time to answer some questions for me, and talking about his business.
How long have you owned Scratched Vinyl, and what made you decide to buy a record store?
I bought Rainbow Records, which was in existence for more than 20 years, in August of 2018. In October of 2018, I changed the name to Scratched Vinyl, and moved to the present location. I have a consuming and insatiable appetite for music, and buying a store was the only pseudo-healthy way I could scratch this itch.
What do you carry besides albums?
I offer some incense, and subversive books.
What did you do for work before running Scratched Vinyl?
I was, and still am teaching. I also have a weekly 2 hour radio show of free form music.
What are the last three albums you listened to?
Well, I listen to records all day every day, but over the last two hours I have listened to the new Sonic Boom album, an ep of early DangerMouse re-mixes, a free jazz record from an Athens improv group called Vault of Blossomed Ropes, the first Elvis Costello album, and the second album from Cigarettes After Sex (Cry), which I return to often.
What's the vibe you want people to feel when they walk into your store?
I never really thought about that, I guess I want people to feel genuine. But I know how I feel when I go into a record store - excited and at home - so maybe that's the vibe I would want to share with people that come to the store.
What do you find most unique about working in Barrington?
It's close to my home; I walk and can bring my dog to the store (he doesn't drive - its a long story).
Where is your favorite place to eat in Barrington, and what dish do you recommend?
I like the Yankee Doodle - Sunday Vinyl Breakfast and a double IPA, and I like Pl8 for Szechuan string beans, but everything there is really good.
Is there anything special you would like people to know about Scratched Vinyl?
It’s all special, really.
