Michael J. Miller has a lot to be proud of.
Congratulations on celebrating 50 years in business, that is quite an accomplishment. What would you say is the key to M.J. Miller & Co.'s longevity and success?
The key to our success has been our superlative service in every aspect of what our team offers and the quality of our jewelry.
What sets M.J. Miller & Co. apart from the competition?
When people ask me what I sell, I always tell them "I sell happiness." We treat our customers as we would our closest friends and family. Because of that, we have built great lasting relationships with our customers that have continue to grow throughout their families generations. We have many customers who come in with their grandchildren for engagement rings or graduation celebrations and we hope that our connection with our customer's joy continues for many years.
What are some of the biggest changes you have seen in Barrington over the last 50 years?
That is a tough questions because after living in Barrington for over 50 years I have experienced a lot of changes. Although our town has faced some challenges over the years, I am proud that the good has consistently outweighed the struggles and I hope that this continues in the future.
These last 5 months have been filled with uncertainty and confusion, how has this impacted your business plan for the near future?
Of course our business, like all businesses, faced difficulties during this time. However, we have faced many economic and societal challenges throughout our time here and have came through each of them because of our wide variety of services and our loyal customers. During this time specifically, we created an online store with a specially curated collection of our jewelry in a wide price range, we held facetime appointments, and offered an educational series on Facebook live for our customers to continue to keep in the loop with our business. All of these aspects kept us in touch with our clients and gave them new ways to experience our store. We are proud of our accomplishments during a difficult time and look forward to continuing to build on them.
If you could go back in time knowing what you do now, what advice would you give to yourself personally and professionally?
I was lucky to have a fantastic mentor from a young age in this industry, Harry Winston. He instilled in me a deep respect for quality over quantity. Life is about quality. Quality time, quality friendships, quality experiences, and quality keepsakes. These are the aspects of our lives that matter and last. Jewelry tells a story of legacy without using any words and it lasts for generations.
Everyone in the Barrington area knows you offer exquisite jewelry, what else do you carry that you would like people to know about?
We are happy to offer many services such as Buying & Selling Estate pieces, repairing broken jewelry, custom design, appraisals and more. We also offer a fantastic home decor selection from brands such as Jay Strongwater, Lalique, Mackenzie-Childs, Heritage Crystal, and others.
What makes Barrington special to you?
Barrington has been my home for 50 years. Most of my adult memories of home were made here. Even before I lived here I was visiting my aunt and uncle who lived here often for years. It's always been a place I have considered home.
Where is your favorite place to eat while in Barrington, and what dishes do you recommend?
One of the great changes we have experienced in Barrington is a fantastic selection of restaurants. Depending on what I am craving that day, I may stop into Chessie's for their strawberry salad with chicken, Egg Harbor for an omelette, Shakou for the Black Widow roll, Region for their Bang Bang Shrimp, Canteen for some pulled pork or stop into Sagano for anything on their menu.
