I had a very nice conversation with Coach Morris at Barrington Martial Arts. We talked about his business of course, but we also discussed character building, and problems facing today's youth.
When did you open Barrington Martial Arts, and what made you choose Barrington?
We opened in 1996, so 24 years ago. One of my instructors suggested I purchase the business from another instructor that was going out of business.
What types of programs do you offer that set you apart for other clubs?
We offer Martial Arts classes such as Taekwondo, Karate, and Tai Chi. We also offer Summer Camp, a Virtual/Distance E-learning day camp during the school year, and plan on launching an After School program and a Leadership/Character development program soon.
What is your favorite part of your job?
Helping students and empowering them to be able to face and overcome challenges in life, be it from academics, peers, sports or just life.
How do you spend your time when you are not working?
I love to learn so I love books, seminars/conferences (I attend 4 to 6 a year), working out, and movies.
Where is your favorite place in Barrington to grab a bite to eat, and what dishes do you recommend?
Everything is good at Egg Harbor, and I enjoy the Seafood Udon soup at Sagano's.
What is the last movie you watched, and what did you like about it?
We just finished with our Youth Summer Camp a little over a week ago, and during the kid's lunch time they selected movies for us to watch.
So the last movie I watched was White Fang, and I thought that there were a number of good lessons from the movie. One of which is that doing the right thing is always the best thing.
What book is on your nightstand right now?
"The Fearless Organization" by Amy C. Edmondson.
